The concepts of ‘pre-print’, ‘post-print’ and ‘final published version’ are clearly defined in the Sherpa-Romeo database. A ‘pre-print’ article is that version of the article prior to review – even before submission to the editor. The ‘post-print’ is that version that has been through the review process with the revision incorporated in the article. However, it excludes any value that is added by the publisher, e.g. layout editing. The ‘final published version’ is that article which appears in the published format (hardcopy or digital) and is inclusive of the value added by the publisher, e.g. type-setting and formatting.
